Nitrous Oxide ("Laughing Gas")
What Is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a mild form of conscious sedation delivered through a comfortable nose mask.
Children remain awake, responsive, and able to communicate throughout treatment.
Many children describe feeling relaxed, calm, or "floaty" while breathing nitrous oxide.
Ideal Candidates
Nitrous oxide is often recommended for:
Mild dental anxiety
Nervous first-time patients
Children with a strong gag reflex
Children who need shorter dental procedures
Patients who can follow directions and breathe comfortably through their nose
When Nitrous Oxide May Not Be Recommended
Nitrous oxide may be less effective or inappropriate for children who:
Have severe anxiety or dental phobia
Cannot breathe through their nose due to congestion
Are very young and unable to cooperate with the mask
Require extensive treatment
Have certain medical conditions that may make nitrous oxide unsuitable
A complete medical review is always performed before recommending nitrous oxide.
Advantages
Safe and well-established
Works quickly
Provides relaxation while keeping children awake
Wears off within minutes after treatment
No prolonged recovery period
Children can typically return to school and activities afterward
Considerations
Provides relaxation but not sleep
Requires a cooperative child
May not be sufficient for extensive treatment or severe anxiety
